Until they [gastro-scientists] create a popcorn that is filling, healthy, or kernaless post-popping so that I don’t need a dental visit every time one of those buggers wedges itself between your teeth, I will make sure I have a semi-full tummy at the movies. {Sidebar: The Perks of Being a Wallflower was just poignant and nostalgia inducing; at every turn I wished I was in H.S again… }
Luckily, 40 paces from the Landmark Sunshine is Macondo; a lively little spot for some Latin-American inspired street food and rather exotic cocktails. Most notably the Aguacate which features a mix of Agave honey, avocado and Mezcal. The high acidity of the Mezcal is counterpointed with the sweet creamy avocado, it is at once soothing and refreshing summer drink.
The Maracuya is on the opposite spectrum and features a double kick of spice between my favorite Canton Ginger liqueur and some fresh diced jalapenos. Sip sip. Ai-ai-ai-ai-ya!
“Summer Scallops: Candy of the Sea “
There is someone at Macondo I must thank for bringing together my two favorite tastes of summer: Scallops and Watermelon. “”
“Watermelon is the most Perfect post-coital food.” — said Everyone Ever.
Juicy beyond measure the scallops are bouncy and just as sweet as the crisp of watermelon. Just an excellent manifest of summer lovin’. The only only improvement is that I recommend the pungent red onions be diced smaller and used less liberally.
The crust crunches like fall leaves and the baked ham of holidays past… just awesome holidays that feature a wasabi alioli!

Cocas – Tuna sliced sashimi tuna, white bean puree, sesame soy oaxaca cheese and white fish roe, jalapeno, onions
Yes. This is a remix of Morimoto’s famous Tuna ‘pizza’. Yes, Morimoto uses a superior grade of Tuna. This is comparable in its combined flavor and is a much more affordable alternative for us creative types, peddling our gastronomic crafts to hungry wolf eyes.
Tasty fun joint. Should be more busy on Thurs – Sat definitely recommend for a pre-post-Indie movie stop! Also known for their $25 unlimited Mimosa Brunch.
Happy Empanada Hour – $2 any Empanada and $6 Macondo’s Classic Latin American Cocktails: Piscos, Mojitos, Caipirinhas and Sangrias Monday through Wednesday, 5pm to 7pm and Thursday and Friday from 4pm to 7pm
